The Pine Beetle Outbreak Killing Spokane Trees: What You Need to Know
If you have ponderosa pine in Spokane, you have a beetle problem coming. Here's how to spot it early, save what you can, and safely remove what's already lost.
Walk through any Spokane neighborhood with mature ponderosa pine — the South Hill, the North Side, Indian Trail, Mead, Colbert — and you'll see them: brown, dying ponderosas standing among healthy ones. The cause is almost always bark beetles, and the outbreak across the Inland Northwest has accelerated dramatically since 2022.
The Two Main Killers
Mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae)
Native to North American forests, but expanding aggressively into urban areas as winters get milder. Attacks ponderosa pine, lodgepole pine, and several other species. Adults bore through bark, lay eggs, and introduce blue-stain fungi that block the tree's water transport. Death usually within 1 year of attack.
Ips beetle (Ips pini and others)
Smaller and faster-reproducing than mountain pine beetle. Multiple generations per year. Often the secondary attacker that finishes off trees stressed by drought, storm damage, or mountain pine beetle. Ips frequently attacks tops of trees first.
How to Identify Beetle-Killed Trees
Stage 1: Active attack
- Pitch tubes — popcorn-like clumps of resin on the trunk where beetles bored in
- Sawdust (frass) at the base of the tree or in bark crevices
- Woodpeckers actively working the trunk
- Crown still green and looks normal
Stage 2: Decline (3–6 months after attack)
- Needles begin yellowing at the top first
- Sap flow reduces, pitch tubes dry out
- Increasing woodpecker damage exposing inner bark
- Tree may still appear partly healthy
Stage 3: Dead (6–18 months after attack)
- All needles brown or fallen
- Bark loose, falling off in patches
- Blue-gray staining visible on exposed wood
- Tree is now a structural hazard
Why Spokane Is Getting Hit Hard Right Now

Can You Save an Infested Tree?
Honest answer: usually no. Once a ponderosa shows pitch tubes from successful beetle entry, the tree is functionally dead — you just don't see it yet. The exception is very early-stage attacks where the tree successfully "pitched out" the beetles (you'll see large pitch tubes with no boring activity).
Preventive treatments (carbaryl or permethrin spray applied annually before beetle flight in May–July) can protect HEALTHY high-value trees in active outbreak areas. Why Beetle-Killed Trees Need to Come Down Fast
- Brittle dead wood fails unpredictably — climbers can't trust limbs
- Standing dead pines drop limbs without warning, even in light wind

- Removal cost INCREASES the longer you wait (more hazard, more rigging required)
What Removal Looks Like for a Beetle-Killed Ponderosa
Beetle-killed pines are removed differently than live pines:
- More conservative rigging (we can't trust the wood)
- Often requires crane support for trees over structures
- Climbers use additional anchor points
- Expect 20–40% premium over live tree removal pricing
- Wood is typically chipped and disposed (not firewood — beetles can spread)
Protecting Healthy Trees on Your Property
- Deep watering during summer drought (slow soak, not surface spray)
- Mulch out to the drip line (not piled against the trunk)
- Remove any beetle-killed trees on your property within 6 months of death
- Schedule preventive trunk spray for high-value trees in active outbreak areas
- Avoid construction damage near pine roots — major risk factor
