Winter Ice and Snow Load: Protecting Spokane Trees Through the Hardest Months

One heavy December snowfall can drop more weight on a Spokane tree than a 60 mph windstorm. Here's how to harden your trees against ice and snow — and what to do when limbs come down.

Spokane's winters punish trees in ways most homeowners don't see coming. We don't get the catastrophic ice storms the Northeast deals with, but we do get something arguably worse for trees: repeated heavy wet snowfalls dropped onto evergreens that never get a chance to shed. By February, even healthy ponderosas and Douglas firs are carrying hundreds of pounds of accumulated snow load that the trunk and root system simply weren't designed for.

Every January and February, we run emergency calls for the same scenarios: a ponderosa bent 30 degrees and frozen in that position, a Douglas fir top snapped clean off, a Norway spruce split down the middle, a deodar cedar uprooted from saturated frozen soil. Most of those failures were preventable with fall prep. The rest needed fast response so the damage didn't compound.

Why Spokane's Snow Is Especially Hard on Trees

  • Wet snowfalls in the 28–34°F range stick to needles instead of sliding off
  • Repeat snowfalls layer onto previous accumulation that hasn't melted
  • Inland Northwest evergreens hold their needles year-round — every branch surface collects snow
  • Frozen ground prevents root flexibility, so trunk and limbs absorb all the load
  • Sudden warmups create saturated soil while snow load is still on the canopy = topple time

Fall Prep: Setting Up Trees to Survive Winter

1. Late-fall structural pruning (before first hard freeze)

October and early November are the right time to remove dead branches, broken hangers from summer storms, and any limbs with obvious structural defects. Snow load is much harder on a tree that's already weakened. Skip cosmetic pruning until late winter — heavy summer-style pruning before winter can stress the tree.

2. Identify the snow-load risk trees on your property

  • Ponderosa pines and Douglas firs with co-dominant tops
  • Norway spruce, deodar cedar, and ornamental conifers planted too close to homes
  • Birch and aspen — flexible but prone to permanent bending under snow
  • Newly planted trees still establishing roots — first 2 winters are critical

3. Deep-water before the ground freezes

A well-hydrated tree going into winter is significantly more resilient than a drought-stressed one. One last deep soaking in late October at the drip line gives the tree water reserves to draw on during the dry winter months when frozen soil prevents uptake.

During a Snow Event: What to Do (And NOT Do)

Instead: gently sweep snow upward off lower branches with a soft broom, working from the branch tip inward, only when temperatures are above 25°F. Leave upper branches alone — they'll either hold or they won't, and you can't reach them safely anyway. If a branch is already bent severely, leave it. Snapping it off the rest of the way is usually worse than letting it slowly recover after melt.

When to call for emergency help

  • Branch broken and hanging over a roof, driveway, or walkway
  • Tree split at a co-dominant trunk — the two halves will continue to fail
  • Top broken off in a way that compromises the rest of the tree
  • Tree uprooted, leaning into another tree or onto a structure
  • Limb on a power line — stay 30 feet away and call us and Avista immediately

After the Thaw: Damage Assessment

Most snow-load damage becomes visible in late February and March. Walk your property after the major melt and look for: permanently bent trunks that didn't spring back, fresh cracks in main limbs, hanging or partially attached branches, splits in the bark, and any ground heave at the base of leaning trees. Document with photos — if a tree fails in spring windstorms, your insurance claim will be much stronger with before-and-after pictures.

The 'Bent But Not Broken' Tree

Young birches and aspens often bend severely under snow and look ruined — but usually recover most of the way by mid-summer. Don't cut these down in panic. Larger evergreens that bent more than 20 degrees and haven't recovered by April probably have permanent root damage and should be assessed by a professional.

Why Winter Removal Is Sometimes Smart

Counterintuitively, winter is often the best time to remove a borderline-hazard tree in Spokane. Frozen ground means less lawn damage from equipment, the tree's leaf load is gone (lighter and easier to rig), bee and wasp nests aren't active, and our schedule has more flexibility than during spring storm rush. If you've been putting off removing that questionable tree, January–February is the right window.
