Ice Damage to Spokane Trees — Freezing Rain Survival

Freezing rain coats every twig and branch in a layer of ice that can multiply the canopy's weight by 5–10x. A medium-sized conifer that normally weighs 8,000 lbs in canopy mass might suddenly be carrying 40,000+ lbs of ice. No tree's wood was engineered for that load.

The mechanism is brutal: ice accumulates fastest on the smallest twigs (most surface area per unit volume), which loads the outer canopy, which acts like a long lever pulling down on the main branches. The pop-pop-pop you hear during an ice storm overnight is individual branches reaching their failure point and snapping.

Don't go outside during active ice loading. Walking under a loaded canopy is the most dangerous thing you can do during an ice event — branches fail without warning and ice-loaded branches fall fast and heavy enough to be lethal. Stay inside until the event has passed and temperatures have stabilized.

After the ice melts, the danger continues. Stressed branches that didn't quite break during loading often fail in the days following — partially-cracked branches dry out, stored tension releases, and what looked like a survivor turns out to be a delayed casualty. Walk the property carefully after an ice event and stay alert for new dropouts.

Prevention is limited for ice events. Pre-winter crown cleaning helps because removing deadwood and weak branches reduces the points most likely to fail under load.
