Summer Drought Stress: How to Spot a Dying Spokane Tree Before It Falls

Spokane summers now routinely hit 100°+ with weeks of zero rainfall. That heat kills more trees than any windstorm — and a drought-stressed tree can stay green for years after it's structurally dead.

Here's the unsettling truth about Spokane trees: most of the dead ponderosas we remove every fall weren't killed by beetles or storms. They were killed by drought stress two or three summers earlier, then stood there looking mostly green while their wood quietly turned to dry kindling. By the time the canopy actually browns, the tree has been a falling hazard for years.

Spokane's climate has shifted noticeably in the last decade. We're seeing more 100°+ days, longer dry stretches, and earlier snowpack melt. Trees planted when summers topped out in the 80s are now under constant chronic stress — and most homeowners can't tell the difference between a healthy tree and a structurally dead one with a delayed canopy.

What Drought Stress Actually Does to a Tree

When a tree can't pull enough water through its roots, it stops moving sugars between leaves and roots. The fine root system dies first, which means the tree loses anchorage AND the ability to recover the next time it rains. Cambium (the living layer just under the bark) thins out. The tree shifts energy from growth to survival, and any leftover defense capacity against beetles and fungus collapses.

The brutal part: a tree can lose more than half its functional root system and still push out a normal-looking spring canopy. You won't see what's happening below ground until a windstorm reveals it.

Early Warning Signs (Year 1–2 of Stress)

  • Slightly thinner canopy than last summer — fewer needles, more light visible through the crown
  • Premature fall color in August or early September
  • Smaller-than-normal new growth at branch tips
  • Cones forming earlier and in larger numbers (a 'stress crop')
  • Sap weeping from small cracks in the bark

Mid-Stage Warning Signs (Year 2–3)

  • Yellowing or reddish-brown needles in patches across the canopy
  • Dead branches scattered throughout, not just on one side
  • Increased woodpecker activity drilling for beetles
  • Pitch tubes — small popcorn-like blobs of resin on the trunk where bark beetles entered
  • Sawdust collecting in bark crevices or at the base

Why beetles follow drought

Healthy trees pitch beetles out with sap pressure. Drought-stressed trees can't generate the pressure, so beetles tunnel successfully. Once you see pitch tubes, the tree is already infested. Mountain pine beetle and ips beetle are killing thousands of Spokane ponderosas every year — almost always trees that were drought-weakened first.

Terminal Signs (Tree Is Already Structurally Dead)

  • More than 50% of the canopy is brown, red, or bare
  • Bark sloughing off in sheets — clear sign cambium is dead underneath
  • Mushrooms or fungal conks at the base (root rot)
  • Hollow sound when you tap the trunk
  • Dropping branches with no wind

What You Can Do for Marginal Trees

Deep watering — the right way

Forget your sprinkler system. Mature trees need slow, deep soakings: a soaker hose at the drip line (the outer edge of the canopy, not the trunk) running for 60–90 minutes once every 10–14 days during dry stretches. The goal is moisture 12–18 inches deep, where the absorbing roots actually are.

Mulch the root zone

A 3-inch layer of arborist wood chips out to the drip line cools the soil by 10–15°F and dramatically reduces evaporation. Keep mulch a few inches off the trunk itself — piled against bark, it causes rot.

Skip the fertilizer

Fertilizing a drought-stressed tree usually makes things worse — it pushes growth the tree can't support with its damaged root system. Water, mulch, and time are the only real interventions. If the tree can't recover with those, it can't recover with chemistry.

When to Stop Trying and Remove

Honest answer: most ponderosas with more than 30% dead crown will not recover, and the longer they stand, the more dangerous and expensive they become to remove. The decision isn't 'can this tree be saved' — it's 'is this tree currently safe to leave near my house'. Those are very different questions.

  • Tree leans over a structure, driveway, or play area → remove now
  • Tree is within falling distance of power lines → remove now (coordinate with utility)
  • Tree is in open acreage away from targets → can be monitored; consider removal next winter
  • Tree has beetle activity + dead crown → remove before beetles move to neighboring trees
