Signs a Tree May Be Diseased or Failing
Watch for thinning or fading crowns, dead branches concentrated at the top, leaves or needles that drop early or discolor off-season, fungal conks or mushrooms at the base, cankers or sunken dead bark, sawdust-like boring dust, bark falling away in plates, mushy or hollow-sounding wood, and soil heaving or cracking near the root plate. Decay at the base and a new lean are the two combinations that concern us most, because they point at root or trunk failure rather than a survivable problem.
Common Problems on Spokane Trees
In this area we most often see bark beetle activity in stressed ponderosa pine, root and butt decay in older conifers and cottonwoods, storm wounds that opened the trunk to decay, and drought-stressed trees in shallow soil or compacted yards. When Removal Is the Right Call
Removal makes sense when decay has compromised the trunk or root plate, when a large share of the crown is dead, when the tree is within reach of a house, driveway, or play area, or when the condition will not reverse. Structural failure risk — not appearance — drives the recommendation. A tree with a cosmetic problem and sound wood usually gets monitored or pruned instead.

We use climbing and rope rigging, spar-pole dismantles, and crane picks where access allows, keeping load off the compromised sections. Debris is chipped and hauled, and stump grinding can be handled in the same visit.

Can a diseased tree be saved?
Sometimes. Localized branch dieback, minor cankers, or drought stress on an otherwise sound tree can often be managed with pruning and better watering. Advanced root or trunk decay generally cannot be reversed.
Will a diseased tree infect my other trees?
Some problems spread, particularly bark beetles moving to nearby stressed conifers and root diseases moving through contact between root systems. That risk is part of what we look at when recommending removal.
How can you tell if a tree is dying?
We look at how much of the crown is live, whether dieback is at the top, the presence of conks, cankers, boring dust or bark loss, the condition of the root collar, and whether the wood sounds sound. It is a visual and hands-on assessment, not a lab test.
Do you provide a written assessment?
